The Case of the Haunted Helmet

Article by Brent L. George

Investigators: Melissa, Brent, Jon, Wendy, and Daine, a local theoretical physicist who was in this instance invited to observe the investigation.
Article Disclaimer: This article deals with an object of historical significance that once belonged to an officer of the Third Reich. If discussion of Nazi Germany or the image of a swastika in any way offends you, you should not read this article. The S.P.I.R.I.T. team presents the evidence from this case from an objective and fact-based scientific point of view. Nothing else. The spirit we helped cross over was a confused soul who needed our help. He very likely died scared, alone, and confused – far from home, doing what his country told him he had to do.

The S.P.I.R.I.T. team was dispatched to the Folsom, CA home of an older couple.  Although the couple had experienced very little paranormal activity in their home, they had recently inherited an object of historical significance that seemed to have its own energy – to the point where the husband, Michael, acquired a K2 meter in order to test the object. The object in question was a World War II police helmet worn by an officer of the Third Reich.

Since the claims of paranormal activity were specific to the helmet, S.P.I.R.I.T.’s first task was to verify the authenticity of the helmet, and when it was manufactured. This is important because if the helmet was manufactured after 1945, it would not be authentic and would therefore not be of historical significance.  It is a sad truth that authentic artifacts from the Nazi Regime are considered highly collectible – anything collectible can and very often is reproduced. So we had to make sure we were dealing with the real McCoy here.

The helmet appeared to be from the correct time period; scratches on the helmet appeared to indicate that the Nazi insignia were original to the helmet, and the lining (what was left of it) appeared correct. The worn “Edel” stamp inside the helmet was the one thing more than anything else that established that the helmet was genuine and very likely saw combat use early in the war.

This is where the highest EMF readings were detected.

Helmet Marking

Deutsche Edelstahl Company manufacturer marking

Helmet Front

M1934 style helmet

Nazi Helmet Swastika

Issued between 1940 and 1943 to an officer of the Deutsche Polizei

The location of the markings on the helmet identify it as an authentic M1934 style helmet issued between1940 and 1943 to an officer of the Deutsche Polizei – the German Police. It is important to understand that the Deutsche Polizei were a military unit separate from the Heer (army) Luftwaffe (Air Force) or the Kriegsmarine (Navy). These three units formed the German Military, known as the Wehrmacht. The Deutsche Polizei were an elite fighting unit responsible for anything from fire control to crowd / civil unrest suppression, to internal investigations and guard duty for members of the German High Command. The Deutsche Polizei operated under the direct authority of the Nazi SS (ShutzStaffel, or Secret Police).

The “Edel” marking shows the helmet was manufactured by the Deutsche Edelstahl Company, which produced these helmets from 1934 to 1943. The markings on the helmet and the absence of the early “steel comb” that would run along the outside center of the helmet identify it as an Edelstahl helmet issued between 1940 and 1943. Interestingly, edelstahl also means “stainless steel” in German. The company’s name (translated) was the German Stainless Steel Company.

The Investigation

K2 meters consistently hit to “3” (the third light) or between 2.5 and 10 milligauss at the front of the helmet. The EDI Meter also hit to two lights on the helmet. The Trifield Meter, which is more sensitive than the K2 or EDI meters, and measures in microteslas  (1 microtesla = 10 volts / meter) hit to 100 microteslas on the front, center, and inside the helmet, essentially “pegging” the Trifield Meter. The meter was then set to filter out AC and DC electric current, radio waves, and microwaves, leaving unexplained electromagnetic energy as the only possibility that would even begin to account for these readings. Since the helmet is constructed solely of stainless steel, it is not and cannot be naturally magnetic by itself, leaving the cause of these readings as unexplained, or paranormal. Added to this, a glowing white orb is seen coming out of the helmet while the Trifield readings are being taken, and again flying behind the helmet as I conclude the readings, commenting, “That’s a haunted object, folks!”

Next, we conducted an SB11 Spirit Box session in the direct presence of the helmet. Almost immediately, we received the Spirit Box response, “Wie geht’s?” This is informal German for “How’s it going?” This alone constitutes proof of the paranormal – an intelligent response in German, while conducting a Spirit Box session in front of a suspected haunted Nazi helmet. It should be noted that the family is not of German heritage or descent, and there are no radio stations within a thousand miles of the investigation that broadcast in German. The SB11 Spirit Box response of “Wie geht’s” should be absolutely impossible.

Melissa and Wendy

Melissa and Wendy during the Spirit Box session.

We continued to receive responses in German to questions asked in German:

Investigator: “Der Zweiten WeldKrieg ist vorbei. Deutschland hat den Krieg verloren.” (The Second World War is over. Germany lost the war).

SB 11 Spirit Box: “Den Krieg – “  (The war…..)

Investigator:  “Waren Sie im Krieg getotet?”  (Were you killed in the war?)

SB11 Spirit Box: “Da.”

This response is interesting. “Da” is yes, in Russian. However, it is very close to the German word for yes, “Ja.”

A German spirit suddenly responding in Russian in this situation is not as inconsistent as one might think. On September 1st, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, formally opening the Second World War. On August 23, 1941, Hitler signed a non-aggression treaty with Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union at the time.  On June 22, 1942, Hitler broke that treaty and invaded the Soviet Union, infuriating Stalin. This decision on Germany’s part would prove to be one of several in a series of decisions that played a major role in turning the tide of war in the European Theater and bringing about the destruction of the Third Reich. When the Allies invaded Northern France at Normandy on June 6, 1944, Hitler had spread himself too thin, having mounted a ground war across the largest sovereign nation in the world geographically. Ultimately, the Third Reich could not sustain this level of control over Europe as the Allies pushed from the West and the Soviets pushed back from the East. Poland was thus a pivotal battleground both early and late in the war in the European Theater.  The SB11 Spirit Box  responding in Russian, combined with the date the helmet was manufactured as an M1934, places this soldier on the Russian front in 1942, where he most likely met his untimely death.

Investigator: “Wann wurden Sie getotet?” (When were you killed?)

SB11 Spirit Box: “Zwei n Fiertig.” (Forty – Two).

When we closed the Spirit Box session, We thanked the spirit for speaking with us. We received a final  “Tshcuss!” (So long!)

Based on this evidence and the investigation overall, the S.P.I.R.I.T. team feels confident in claiming that we spoke to the spirit of a deceased soldier of the Third Reich who died on the Russian front some time after June 22, 1942. The soldier was very pleasant and seemed genuinely pleased to be given a chance to tell his story. He was likely a young man in his early twenties – he knew little of the world that he died for. It should be reiterated here that even though he fought for one of the most destructive political regimes that the world has ever seen, he himself was just a human soul who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time in history. This sad case was one that affected every team member in different ways. The evidence gathered in the case was, in our humble opinion, phenomenal, and difficult to discount as anything but concrete proof of the afterlife.

Melissa felt that he was reluctant to cross over for fear of punishment for his actions during the war as a soldier. These acts were very likely beyond terrible, and may have included killing civilians. We assured him (in German) that he would be welcome on the other side, that whatever acts he committed would be reviewed in the light of the fact that he did these things under military orders during the worst military conflict of the century. Ultimately, we felt the spirit was ready to cross over.

After meditating and crossing the spirit over, Melissa conducted a cleansing of both the home and the helmet, with energy work and holy water. After the cleansing, the S.P.I.R.I.T. team noted that the helmet was still giving off EMF readings, but at dramatically reduced levels.

The team also completed a walkthrough of the entire home, to ensure that the helmet was the only thing in the home that was haunted. In the upstairs Master Bedroom, Melissa picked up on the homeowner’s deceased mother, and felt constricted in the throat and chest. Indeed, the occupant’s mother had died of lung disease. Melissa also felt an intense male energy in the Master Bedroom closet – this turned out to be the living energy of the homeowner.

Case Closed

Classification: Haunted Object / Spirit Attachment to a Physical Object

UPDATE: As of this writing, January 21, 2018, the helmet continues to cause EMF meters to go off at reduced levels.

A Few Simple Steps For Staying Safe On The Job: Shielding & Protection For Mediums & Paranormal Investigators

The effects of a spiritual attack can linger for months, even years. In fact, things usually get worse if left unaddressed. There is a mountain of documentation within the paranormal community pertaining to cases of evil spirits taking possession of dwellings and the people in them. As a professional psychic medium or paranormal investigator, it is crucial to take steps to protect yourself and your team from the evil, sometimes homicidal entities you encounter on the job.

One notable psychic medium asserts that the famous case in Amityville, New York resulted from a demonic haunting that was allowed to remain in the home. The activity in the home rose to a fever pitch and eventually left the entire DeFeo family dead and son, Ronnie, in prison for life. Although the DeFeo case is extreme, victims in other cases report the decline of physical and mental health, increased financial problems and the destruction of important personal relationships as the result of negative or demonic hauntings. With increased exposure to the paranormal realm comes increased risk of attacks of this nature. As a professional medium or investigator, you must also guard against energy drain that can impact your physical and emotional health.

While this article is written from the standpoint of a psychic medium, it encompasses the whole paranormal investigative community. It is vital to the safety and the success of any medium or investigator to employ simple protective practices in their work. Spirits are known to scratch, push, bite, attach themselves and can influence your thoughts and emotions. They can invade the physical body, causing medical problems in otherwise healthy individuals. In the most extreme cases, evil entities can cause serious bodily injury and even death to victims. As a result, many mediums and greenhorn ghost hunters are chased off of the job when an ornery entity shows up with not-the-nicest of intentions. You’ve beckoned the spirits. They showed up. Now what?

Follow these simple but powerful steps and stay safe on the job:

White Light Meditation

Prior to beginning a reading or entering a location, take 5-10 minutes to complete this easy meditation. Imagine a powerful white light circling your head and moving down the length of your body all the way to your feet. Imagine this light expanding into a bubble or aura of protection that moves with you as you go about your work.

If you are a spiritual or religious person, you can imagine this protective light as a gift from or an extension of your higher power. If you are not religious, it is more than sufficient to imagine this light surrounding you as pure, protective energy and the extension of your own personal power and groundedness.

In addition to adding a layer of protection, you might find that this meditation enhances your readings or investigations. Positive entities are attracted to this vital energy and take comfort in it. It is believed that spirits cannot see man-made light but they can easily see candlelight and the light energy that comes from a warm human aura.

Negative entities, on the other hand, shrink from the light. They prefer dark, dank spaces and are most at home around humans with fearful or depressed energy. Their power is somewhat diminished by the positive energy force generated by the white light meditation.

To take this meditation a step further, imagine a layer of mirrors surrounding you in addition to the white light. The mirrors reflect light back into the world. This allows you to have a powerful, positive influence on the environment while protecting you also from becoming drained or being attacked.

Meditation may seem unnatural if you are not into meditation. It does not have to have a religious or even spiritual connotation to work well. When you become good at it, you can begin your meditation in just a couple of minutes and imagine the light expanding as you go about your work. Continue to focus on the light at times throughout the reading or investigation.

Talismans

Most mediums show up for work armed with talismans and other tools of the trade to keep them safe. Investigators benefit from talismans, too. If you are a religious person, you may draw from the traditions of your faith in selecting protective items for use in your work. What types of talismans or protective items are used? There are tried-and-true methods within the paranormal community listed below. However, there aren’t really any rules – if the items make you feel safe and boost your confidence in your work, consider them worthy and appropriate. One famous investigator relies on a meaningful tattoo. Before heading out to the neighborhood tattoo shop, check out this list of a few things commonly used by mediums and investigators:

  • Crosses, Religious Medals, Holy Water
  • Medicine bags filled with herbs and stones, used by indigenous people for thousands of years.
  • Stones, like crystals and black tourmaline, used to banish negativity and charge the environment with positive energy.

Show Respect

The old “golden rule” even applies in the spirit world. When engaging in communication with spirits, be respectful. Many paranormal groups use heckling to rouse spirits. While this method is effective in stirring things up, it usually brings about the kind of attention you don’t want. The most responsible para-professionals don’t use heckling for fear of putting their clients into a dangerous situation. In readings, speak to your clients on the other side just as you would during a business conversation on the physical plane. This standard separates the thrill seekers from the true professionals in the paranormal community.

Shutting Down

Friendly spirits are desperate for communication. Evil spirits want to draw energy from you and wreak havoc in your life. Because natural mediums are born with their abilities, it is impossible to shut them off entirely. (Imagine trying to turn your nose off when the trash truck drives by.) In addition to regular home cleanings with sage and salt (and prayer if you are religious) you must shut down communication after every reading.

When your work is done, politely ask the spirits to leave you alone. Be specific. Tell spirits that they are not allowed in your energy field nor are they allowed to follow you home. Be firm in telling them to stay away from your family and pets. Bear in mind, however, that they don’t always go away the first time you ask. Stay alert in the hours and days after an intense reading for signs of spirit attachments. In particular, keep track of your energy level and moods. Practice the white light and mirrors meditations; they work to cleanse your energy field and protect you from spirits seeking to attach. Remember, your work is not necessarily done when you shut down your investigation or leave the office for the day.

Cleaning House

Setting up boundaries around your home and property allows you lead a normal life outside of work as a medium or investigator. Because spirits, good and bad, draw from your vital energy, it is not advisable to allow any spirits to dwell in your home. You must cleanse your home of spiritual energy – including your own – on a regular basis. Living people deposit energy in the places they live and work. In order to truly begin each day anew, you must clear out this type of residual energy, too.

Cleanse the home every 1-2 weeks. (If you do readings for clients in your home, you need to do this more frequently.) To cleanse the home, many professionals burn sage and candles while asking for peace and positive energy to dwell in the home. Place pure sea salt in the corners of each room and at the corners of the property outdoors to keep spirits away when you walk to the car or mow the lawn. Just like talismans, home cleansing rituals tend to be personal. Following the suggested methods of burning sage and scattering salt is a great place start. Develop additional methods on your own based on your spiritual preferences.

If you skip this step, you might find yourself living in a swirling portal of energy where spirits of all kinds run rampant. Energy drain over a period of time can lead to depression and health problems.

Plan for the worst

Any medium or investigator needs to make a plan in case the worst happens during – or after – a reading or investigation. Reach out to your team, a mentor, psychic medium or healer if you sense that your energy field has been compromised. If you are having obvious health problems consult a medical doctor. Stay alert for signs of energy drain, depression or unusual activity at home. Reacting to red flags when they pop up affords a huge advantage in dealing with pesky spirits who trample on your boundaries.

What Not to Do

Never try to cleanse or bless a dwelling or person without permission from your client. Further, do not try to cross over spirits without speaking first with your client. The reason for this is because your job as a medium (or investigator) is to collect information and deliver messages – it is their job to decide what to do about it. If you determine it is a loved one flicking lights off and on or emanating the smell of cigar smoke in the home, your client might want them to stick around. Further, if the entity is evil or demonic, you must make a plan to further diagnose and properly treat the haunting. An off-the-cuff house blessing rarely works in demonic cases and usually just makes things worse.

Following practices to stay safe while working with the spirit realm allows you to continue this important work over time. The most successful mediums and investigators are those who make their own safety and that of their clients a top priority.

S.P.I.R.I.T. INVESTIGATION: SUNDOWN AT THE GRAVEYARD: THE MYSTERIOUS LADY IN WHITE

Article by Brent L. George

06/27/21015

Investigators / Guests Assigned to the Case:

  • Melissa Lockett
  • Brent George
  • Jon Koyasako
  • Kara Koyasako
  • Lisa Steele
  • Amy Deinken
  • Miranda Shea
  • Kaylie Peterson
  • James White

In a small rural cemetery near the Sacramento area, a local legend seems to be living on, so to speak. (The cemetery’s name and exact location is being withheld for security reasons.)

An apparition known locally as the “Lady in White” is sometimes reportedly seen walking amongst the tombstones of this cemetery, which dates back to 1876. The Lady in White is often seen just after dark, according to reports.  S.P.I.R.I.T. team members were dispatched to investigate.

The team arrived at the cemetery at around 6:30 p.m. This gave team members ample time to familiarize themselves with the grounds before dark. The team split loosely into 3 groups – after dark, no one was to go anywhere in the cemetery alone.

At approximately 8:30 p.m. I captured an EVP in the northwest corner of the graveyard. This particular corner of the property seemed to lend itself to photographs that were out of focus for no reason, people feeling a drain of their energy or feeling otherwise uncomfortable there, and a sudden drain on device batteries. The EVP I captured was in response to my asking the entity its name – the answer was an audible “Victor.”

This coincided with two nearby gravestones with the first name “Victor” on them. What’s interesting is that it is this section of the cemetery where the “Lady in White” often seems to originate from. The two Victors laid to rest there were assumedly father and son, with the mother “Carol” laid to rest between them. Carol’s gravestone indicated that she had been associated with the medical field.

After I captured the EVP and left that corner of the cemetery to investigate other areas, Kaylie and James were drawn to the same northwest corner of the cemetery by a sense of unrest there, and were drawn to the grave of the elder Victor, without any prior knowledge that I had captured the “Victor” EVP there.  Sporadic K2 Meter hits were also noted at the elder Victor’s grave.

On the northeast corner of the cemetery there is a small unimproved open area owned by the cemetery board of trustees, but not actually part of the cemetery.  This area was unkempt, with piles of leaves and a disheveled wood pile. As night fell on the cemetery, two investigators found the bare skeleton of a bird surrounded by a rough circle of raw corn kernels, in this unimproved area.  A few feet away from this was evidence of a small campfire. This led S.P.I.R.I.T. team members to postulate that the area may have been used for some type of pagan small animal sacrifice ritual. Two of the team’s sensitives felt there may be human remains / unmarked graves in this unimproved area, but this could not be verified.

One of the graves in the cemetery appeared to be fresh, and thus was easier for S.P.I.R.I.T. sensitives to pick up on residual energy from the gravesite. No temporary headstone had been placed at the grave yet. Our sensitives felt that it was the new grave of a man in his 30s who had died unexpectedly in a car crash. This information has not, as of this writing, been verified.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. a Spirit Box session at a grave site proved inconclusive. At the end of that session, Amy and Miranda approached the group with a photograph they had just captured in the northwest corner of the cemetery, near the grave of the two Victors and Carol:

This photograph is what is known as a “mist” photograph. It was a clear night with no fog whatsoever, and there is no logical explanation for the photograph.

Cemetery Mist

Did Amy and Miranda capture a photograph of the Lady in White as she left her grave for her nightly evening stroll?  Could the “Lady in White” be Carol, a former nurse or doctor, whose husband appears to be not at rest?

Such postulations are easy and tempting to make, and who knows – perhaps it’s even true. But the evidence does not support that. The evidence gathered by the S.P.I.R.I.T. team members on this investigation does strongly suggest that something is not at rest in this peaceful rural cemetery, and by the end of the night, we were unable to either confirm or debunk the Mystery of the Lady in White.
